Flotation Modifiers for Improved Selectivity

MetSoP provides flotation modifiers designed to influence mineral surface behaviour and create suitable conditions for selective separation.
The correct modifier can help improve collector response, control unwanted mineral flotation and support recovery and concentrate quality.

The Role of Modifiers in Flotation

Modifiers change how minerals interact with collectors and other flotation reagents.

Their function depends on the ore characteristics, water chemistry, reagent suite and operating conditions. A modifier may activate a target mineral, suppress an unwanted mineral or improve the conditions required for effective separation.

Activators

Activators modify a mineral surface to improve its response to a collector.

Copper sulphate is commonly used to activate certain sulphide minerals, helping the collector attach more effectively. The correct dosage and point of addition depend on the mineral system and flotation conditions.

Depressants

Depressants reduce the floatability of unwanted minerals, supporting improved selectivity and concentrate quality.

MetSoP supplies a dedicated range of flotation depressants, including MetDep TAC and MetDep 22.

Selecting the Right Modifier

Modifier performance is influenced by several connected factors. Our metallurgists consider:

  • Ore mineralogy
  • Target and unwanted minerals
  • Water chemistry
  • Collector interactions
  • Reagent dosage and addition point
  • Circuit conditions
  • Recovery and grade objectives

Laboratory testing and on-site technical support can be used to evaluate modifier performance and identify suitable application conditions.
