KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Sample Preparation and Handling
– Receive, log, and track samples according to established procedures.
– Crush, split, and pulverise samples to required specifications.
– Ensure proper labelling, storage, and full traceability of all samples.
2. Fire Assay Operations
– Prepare flux and accurately weigh samples for fusion.
– Perform fusion and cupellation under controlled conditions.
– Prepare, part, and weigh precious metal beads with precision.
– Calibrate balances and equipment according to SOPs and verification schedules.
– Follow safe handling procedures for lead-containing materials and adhere to all safety protocols.
– Perform any related duties assigned by the supervisor in support of laboratory operations.
3. ISO/IEC 17025 Compliance
– Carry out tasks in accordance with the laboratory’s Quality Management System.
– Follow approved Standard Operating Procedures and recognised Test Methods.
– Participate in internal audits, corrective actions, and quality assurance activities.
– Maintain full traceability of activities, measurements, and results.
– Record data clearly and accurately in logbooks, worksheets, and LIMS.
4. Safety, Housekeeping, and Equipment Maintenance
– Adhere to all safety procedures, including the correct use of PPE and safe furnace practices.
– Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of work areas and equipment.
– Report non-conformances, incidents, or unsafe conditions without delay.
5. Teamwork & Communication
– Work collaboratively with fellow lab staff, supervisors, and QA personnel.
– Participate in training and continuous improvement initiatives.
– Communicate any anomalies, delays, or non-conformities promptly.
QUALIFICATIONS:
– Matric / Grade 12 with Mathematics and Physical Science (preferred)
EXPERIENCE: – 1–3 years in a fire assay or mineral testing laboratory
– Experience working in an ISO/IEC 17025-accredited laboratory preferred
KEY COMPETENCIES: – Knowledge of fire assay procedures and laboratory equipment
– Familiarity with ISO/IEC 17025 standards and quality systems
– Attention to detail and high level of accuracy
– Physically fit – able to work in high-heat and physically demanding environments
– Effective time management and teamwork – Basic computer literacy (advantageous).
WORKING CONDITIONS:
– Hot, dusty, and physically intense environment
– Exposure to chemicals, lead, and high temperatures
– Shift work, weekend work, and overtime may be required.
